Memorial Major Lanoe George Hawker

This memorial was erected in 2011 in honor of Major Lanoe George Hawker. He was a British ace pilot during the First World War. With seven confirmed air victories, he was the third pilot to receive the Victoria Cross. During an air battle, he was shot down by Lieutenant Manfred von Richthofen ("The Red Baron"). His plane crashed near the Luisenhof farm on Flers Road. The Luisenhof farm is located about one kilometer south of Ligny-Thilloy on the D10. The place where Hawker crashed was about 200 meters east of the farm. Major Lanoe George Hawker is listed on the Arras Flying Services Memorial for pilots who died and have no known grave.
