Maginot Line - Fort Plan Caval

The Maginot-Fort Plan Caval was a component of the Secteur Fortifié des Alpes-Maritimes. It was manned by men of the 75th BAF. The ouvrage should have consisted of an entrance block and 5 combat blocks. Construction did not start until 1939 and only three infantry blocks were ready for combat. The entrance block and the further underground part were also unfinished. In April 1945, it was defended by elements of the 34. Infanterie-Division and German mountains troops when it was attacked by Free French units. Fort Plan Caval was taken by the French on 11 April 1945.
