Commonwealth War Grave Roman Catholic Cemetery Maurik

At a small Cemetery behind the R.C. Church is one Commonwealth War Grave.
It is the grave of:

Staff Sergeant Peter Burke Hill, Glider Pilot Regiment, 25/09/1944, 5511117, age 22

On September 17, 1944 he landed in a Hamilcar glider near Arnhem, during Operation Market Garden.

During Operation Market Garden in September 1944, many British Airbornes attempted to cross the river Rhine to stay out of the hands of the Germans. Many of these Britons were killed by enemy fire or they drowned in the Rhine. Also Peter Burke Hill, he drowned during the crossing when his boat was hit by a German grenade. His body was found in November 1944 in the River Lek near Maurik.
