Maginot Line - Fort Monte Grosso

This large fort (Gross Ouvrage) was constructed between November 1931 and June 1935. The garrison consisted of 363 soldiers and 10 officers of the 85th BAF and 148th RAP. On 15 June 1940, Monte Grosso fired on Italian mortar positions. A 75mm turret was damaged by an Italian 149mm gun on 20 June 1940. This ouvrage is the only one in the Alps that has two tourelles (gun turrets) with two 135mm howitzers and two 75mm guns.

It is currently abandoned.
