West Battery Portsmouth

In the 1860s, the East and West Auxiliary batteries were built on each side of Southsea Castle to house larger guns facing the Solent. At the start of the 20th Century, the battery was armed with three 12-pounders (5.4 kg) and one 4.7-inch (11.9 cm) QF gun. West Battery was disarmed in 1927, but re-armed again during the Second World War.

This photo shows a emplacement, from a 75mm AA-gun, is from the Second World War. Portsmouth has bombed more than once, so AA-guns were necessary. Like they did in more cities.
