Maginot Line - Ouvrage Bambesch

Ouvrage Bambesch is a small fort (Petit Ouvrage) that was built from 1932 as part of the Secteur Fortifiée de Faulquemont. The garrison consisted of 112 soldiers and 4 officers of the 156th RIF, 2nd RG and 18th RT. It was attacked on June 20, 1940 by the 88mm Flak guns of the German 167. Infanterie-Divison. Block 2 was abandoned after a heavy bombardment with 8.8cm FLAK. The ventilation no longer functioned, which created a risk of suffocation. After consultation, the commander decided to surrender the ouvrage.

Nowadays:
Ouvrage Bambesch is open to the general public.
