Commonwealth War Cemetery Diego Suarez

At the War Cemetery of Antsiranana are 314 Commonwealth war graves. The CWGC also cares for one Belgian War Grave.

This cemetery has been created after the Battle of Madagascar. This battle took place between troops of the Commonwealth (UK, South-Africa and Australia) and Axis (Vichy France and Japan). The battle took place during 5. May 1942 until the surrender of Armand Leon Annet 8. November 1942. The target for Operation Ironclad was to occupy Madagascar and to decline the German and Japanese treat. At 5. May 1942, the Allies landed near Diego Saurez. 2 days later, Diego Saurez was in Allied hands. After the occupy of Diego Saurez, the Allies advanced southwardly. After some resistance on the island of Madagascar, the Battle of Madagascar was over on the 8. November 1942.
