Statue Ramsay Dover Castle

Near Dover Castle is a statue of Admiral Sir Bertram Ramsay.

Bertram Ramsay joined the Royal Navy in 1898 and retired from there in 1938. As the threat of war grew, he was called up again and May and June 1940 he commanded Operation Dynamo (the evacuations of the British Expeditionary Force and French Forces from Dunkirk and other places in northern France) from Dover Castle.

In 1944, he was promoted to admiral and during Operation Neptune (the maritime part of Operation Overlord), he commanded the entire Allied Navy on D-Day.

He was killed in a plane crash in early January 1945.
