War Memorial Loenen aan de Vecht

This War Memorial, in the Leeuwendijkpark, commemorates the residents of Loenen aan de Vecht who died in World War II.

The monument is located in Park Leeuwendijk on the Molendijk in Loenen aan de Vecht. It consists of a semi-circle bench with a wall (made of brick) with a stone column (made of brick) on the right, on which the text 1940-1945 is applied in relief (continuous). A natural stone plaque has been placed on the left.

Remembrance of the dead in Loenen aan de Vecht is held annually at this location on 4 May. This plaque used to be bricked into the wall of the old town hall on the side of the Bredestraat. The annual commemoration was then held there.

The plaque specifically commemorates sailor Wim Logger (1916-1942) from Nieuwersluis who died on board H.M.S. Java (cruiser) in the battle in the Java Sea on 27/28 February 1942. The text on the plaque:

In memory of W. Logger Matroos 2nd class. old 26 years gone down for the Fatherland With Hr.Ms. Cruiser "Java" On 27 February 1942 In the battle of the Java Sea.

Since 2016, the monument has been adopted by a primary school (three in total) in rotation. The schools also participate in the commemoration.
