Memorial Breakout POW Camp Cowra

This memorial commemorates the Japanese escape from No. 12 Prisoner of War Compound at Cowra on 5 August 1944.

During the escape and the following actions, 4 Australian soldiers and 231 Japanese POWs were killed, plus 108 Japanese POWs were wounded.

Many Japanese POWs committed or attempted suicide.
