Established in 1953 by the Society of Cretan Historical Studies, the museum was originally housed in the former residence of Minos Kalokairinos and has since expanded to include a modern wing.
Spanning from the 4th century AD to World War II, the museum’s permanent exhibits are arranged both chronologically and thematically. They feature a diverse array of artifacts, including:
- Ceramics, sculptures, and coins
- Jewelry, wall paintings, and portable icons
- Ritual objects, manuscripts, and heirlooms
- Traditional weavings and a reconstructed Cretan rural home interior
- Rare painings by El Greco (Domenikos Theotokopoulos)
- Nikos Kazantzakis Collection
World War II
Room no. 4 houses a permanent exhibition about the Second World War. The exhibition ventilate the history of Greece and Crete during the war years 1940-1945 (Greco-Italian War, the Battle of Crete and the National Resistance). The exhibition includes weaponry, photographs and other objects such as documents.
