Former Mare Island Naval Shipyard

The Mare Island Naval Shipyard was an important American military base during the Second World War. It consisted of a military hospital, munition depot and research facilities. It was the main construction and maintenance base for submarines. From 1941 to 1945, 16 submarines and 5 ships were built here.
