Evacuation Monument Dennenoord

In the night from 27 to 28 March 1945, a train left the Vries station with destination Franeker. The wagons were densely packed with 528 patients and a handful of nurses of the psychiatric hospital Dennenoord Zuidlaren. They had to leave by order of the occupiers because the buildings had to serve as a war hospital. After a veritable hell ride they were collected in Franeker, where they were housed in various buildings. Franeker at that time was a refuge for evacuees from all parts of the country. Eventually 56 patients of Dennenoord deceased, most of typical "camp diseases".

The monument was unveiled on 27 March 2013 by former nurses who have close experienced the trek up.
