Fort Werk Aan Het Spoel Culemborg

In 1815, an inundation fan lock with an earth battery was built in the Lekdijk near Goilberdingen. In 1848 the battery was improved into a fortress. Later the inundation system was optimized and the fort got four bombproof buildings. In peacetime the dyke road ran right through the fort, but was diverted in case of mobilization. The fort was mobilized in 1914-1918. In 1939 seven concrete shelters and two machine-gun casemates were built on the fort. To the south of the fort there is a high free-standing wall in a meadow. This "bullet trap" is the remains of a German firing range.

The fort has recently been restored and made accessible to the public.
