Resistance Memorial Achterweg

The resistance monument was erected in memory of two members of the Dutch Interior Forces who fell here on 15 April 1945 during a firefight with the occupying forces.

The two victims were: Harm Brouwer and Jan Kaper.

Harm Brouwer was born on March 5, 1922 in Twijzelerheide. He was a milkman in Zwaagwesteinde and a member of the Dutch Interior Forces.
Harm Brouwer is buried at the NH cemetery in Zwaagwesteinde.

Jan Kaper was born on December 15, 1921 in Utrecht. He came from Sint-Jacobi parish and was known in the resistance by the nickname Blonde Jan. As a Marechaussee, he went into hiding in Akkerwoude, because he had already been declared a state threat by the occupier in 1943 and was wanted.
In his position as a policeman in Amsterdam he had to arrest Jewish citizens, which he refused and was arrested for his illegal activities and imprisoned in Amsterdam and forced to work on a ship. He escaped and went into hiding in Akkerwoude, where he became a member of the Knokploeg. In September 1944 he joined the combat squads of his municipality and became group commander.
Jan Kaper is buried at the General Cemetery in Sint-Jacobiparochie.
