Walem Fortress

This fort was built in 1878. After heavy German shelling the fort surrendered on 1 October 1914. A part of the fortress was collapsed and one suspects that there are still about 70 Belgische soldiers buried under the rubble.

In World War II, the German used the fort as anti aircraft battery.

The fortress is only accessible under supervision.
