Memorial Executed Civilians Helen-Bos

The monument is erected for seven civilians of Helen-Bos murdered by Ulanes on the 10th of August 1914.

German soldiers set fire to houses in the village and killed seven of the 100 residents. The village priest Vandeweyer was tortured and threatened, but remained sufficiently observant to notice that the Germans were acting with premeditation: they had brought phosphorous tablets to start fires. The German troops present on the scene that day were the 7th Regiment Cuirassiers and the 12th Regiment Hussars. These atrocities were during and following the battle of Orsmaal.

There is a mortar next to the memorial.
