Monument 82nd Airborne Division and the 1st Canadian Army

The monument in Groesbeek is dedicated to the 505th Parachute Infantry Regiment of the 82nd Airborne Division of the American army, which landed here on September 17, 1944 as part of Operation Market Garden. The monument also honors the 1st Canadian Army, which guarded the area during the winter of 1944-1945.

The monument is located near the Klein Amerika Drop Zone in Groesbeek, one of the most important landing zones for American paratroopers during the operation. It commemorates the efforts of the 82nd Airborne Division, which took up crucial positions on the Groesbeek hills to support the advance to Nijmegen and prevent German counterattacks. After the fighting, Canadian troops took over the area and held out during the harsh winter months.
