Fort Eben-Emael - Bloc canal Nord

This is the bunker Canal Nord, located against the Caestert massif in which Fort Eben-Emael was built.

This bunker had to defend the fort against attacks from the Albert Canal. The bunker consists of two floors and has 2 gun openings on the north and south side. The bunker was connected to the fort's tunnel system.

On the north side towards the village of Kanne, a 60 mm antitank gun was placed on the ground floor. The first floor was equipped with a machine gun and a searchlight.

On the south side towards the village of Lanaye, a machine gun was placed on both floors.

Unfortunately, it seems that the observation turret that was located on top of this bunker is missing. Due to the abundant vegetation, it is not really visible. This turret was also equipped with a machine gun.

During the attack in May 1940, this bunker came under considerable fire and was damaged in the process (not visible in the photos due to the vegetation).

Photo 5 shows the new bridge over the Albert Canal in the background. The old one was destroyed in the war and was located more towards the fort. The pillars of this bridge also contained two bunkers.

To the south the identical type of bunker; Canal Sud was located. But this was demolished in later years with the expansion works on the Albert Canal. Only the entrance in the Caestert Massif is still visible.
