War Memorial Marken

This Memorial commemorates the residents of Marken to the victims who fell in the Second World War.

In memory of the men of Marken
who did not return after World War II.


The names on the monument's plaque are:

Cornelis Zeeman Ezn boatswain, killed on 18-11-1939 on the ss Bolivar by magnetic mines.
Jaap Teerhuis, sailor in the merchant navy. He died of kidney poisoning in London.
Emgert van Zondervan Jzn, soldier with KNIL, killed in Balikpapan.
Klaas Dorland Kzn, performed forced labor in Mühlheim am Ruhr.
Pieter Schipper Jbzn, sailor on the ss Suriname. Torpedoed by U-558.
Hein Visser Mzn, boatswain on the ss Merope. Torpedoed by U-371.
Jacob Boes Kzn, bosun on the ss Jan Lievens. Knocked overboard while setting up a smokescreen and went missing.
Cornelis de Groot, sailor on the inland tugboat "Christiaan". Hit and killed by an English plane on the ship.
Frederik Schouten, performed forced labor in Germany and died there.
Cornelis Visser Hzn, fourth mate on the ss Tjisalak. Torpedoed by a Japanese submarine. Killed by the Japs.
Jaap Janssen Czn, Sailor at the KNSM and died of a serious illness in New York.
