This memorial commemorates 4 Canadian soldiers of the 5th Canadian Tank Division who died in this area during the liberation of Putten, on the night of 17-18 April 1945. They belonged to a unit that advanced towards the village at nightfall and were ambushed by Germans on Voorthuizerstraat. After fierce fighting and the loss of four men and 12 tanks, the Canadians managed to drive out the Germans and the village was liberated. The monument was the initiative of the Putten Foundation October 1944 and was unveiled in 1995 in honour of 50 years of liberation in the presence of relatives of the fallen soldiers.
