Maginot Line - Fortress Billig

The Maginot-fortress Billig was a component of the Secteur fortifié de Thionville. The garrison consisted of 521 soldiers and 16 officers from the 167e RIF. On 15 June 1944, it was bombed by the Luftwaffe, killing two French soldiers. Fort Billig fired 2030 75mm grenades on 24 June to protect Hackenberg. The Germans used the fort for testing explosives during the occupation. In September 1944, elements of the U.S. 90th Infantry Division took the fort after two days of fighting.
