The Hes family -- Hugo Daniel Hes and Betje Hes-Parfumeur and their 7 children, ages 2 to 11 years -- had received a reprieve from an earlier deportation because daughter Mia was diagnosed with scarlet fever and the doctor (Dr. Margarith Danby, daughter of Paul Josef Danby and Rosie Danby-Goldstein, whose stolpersteine are on Veronesestraat 3 in Amsterdam) said no one should leave home due to the risk of contagion. They were cared for by Rosina Fresco (see Spoorlaan 52), Bertha Silverberg, Sophie Toncman and niece Rosie Hes. Mrs. Hes was depressed and she and her husband declined an offer to hide their children. Following a tip, Jew hunters picked up the family on 4 August 1944. Bertha Silverberg and Rosina Fresco went with them to Westerbork. The family members and Rosina were all deported on the same day on the last train to Auschwitz and were murdered there 3 days later. Only Bertha survived.

Hugo Hes and his 6 siblings who were alive in Oss at the beginning of the war were all killed in the Holocaust: Albert David Hes (1943 Sobibor – see Ridderstraat 58), Henri Zvi Hes (1943 Sobibor – see Heuvel 32, Oss), Dina Anna Hes (1943 Sobibor – see Spoorlaan 22), Hugo Daniel Hes (1944 Auschwitz – see Heuvel 79), Antje Hes (1942 Auschwitz – see Spoorlaan 52), Helena Hes (1942 Auschwitz – see Floraliastraat 65) and Meijer Hes (1943 Auschwitz – see Hermanslaan 1).

Betje’s sister Truitje (married to Hugo’s brother Meijer) was murdered in Sobibor. Their stolpersteine are at Hermanslaan 1 in Oss. Betje and Truitje’s mother died before the war and their father, Leman Hijman Parfumeur, was killed at Auschwitz on 6 September 1944 -- see Spoorlaan 32, Oss.

The German artist Gunter Demnig started placing the first Stolpersteine in 1997 in the Berlin's Kreuzberg district.
Meanwhile there are Stolpersteine in many countries.
It reminds the Holocaust in World War II.
A Stolperstein is a concrete stone of 10 x 10cm, with a brass plate on which the name, year of birth and date and place of death are engraved.
The Stolperstein gets a place in the pavement in front of the former house of the victim.
By doing this, Gunter Demnig gives a private memorial to each victim.
His motto is: 'A HUMAN BEING IS FORGOTTEN ONLY WHEN HIS OR HER NAME IS FORGOTTEN'.

Borne was the first town in the Netherlands in which Stolpersteine were placed.
This happened the 29-11-2007.
