The Douwe Egberts memorial was presented by the staff in recognition of what Douwe Egberts did for its employees during the war years.
The management went to great lengths to save people from being sent to Germany. In the 1944-1945 hunger winter, Douwe Egberts in Joure provided food transports to staff in Utrecht. The first hunger evacuees to arrive in Joure were children of Utrecht colleagues.
As thanks for its efforts to help as many as possible, the management also received a porcelain commemorative plate after the war, which can now be seen in the museum in Joure. The museum can be found at Museumstraat 1, 8501 CD Joure.
