Lived here:

Harm Wessels, farm worker
Born November 7, 1917 in Onstwedde
Murdered May 1, 1943 in Winschoten

Harm Wessels is a farm worker in Onstwedde and one of the leading figures of the local strikes in the vicinity of Alteveer. On May 1, around noon, Harm is surprised by an oncoming robbery truck from the Ordnungspolizei. He flees, but doesn't get far: the Ordnungspolizei shoots around haphazardly, hitting Harm in the back. He is not taken. Bystanders are still trying to take him to the hospital in Winschoten, but they are too late. He died the same day. Harm is buried on May 6.

Note: the Stolperstein is located on the Heideweg cycle path in front of the dirt road.
