War Memorial Houten

The Stichting Herdenkingsmonument Houten has realized a new monument in the old village. The new monument and the education project should call for reflection, so that we continue to reflect on peace and freedom and, above all, that we must continue to work on it. 25 numbered tiles have been placed in front of the monument and a line of poetry is placed on a tile every year.

The monument was unveiled on April 29, 2020.

On the back of the existing sofa is the text of the poet Okke Jager:

1945 HOW PRECIOUS IS A VULNERABLE PEOPLE 1995

The text on the tile 2020 reads:

How would it be
to have no freedom
to feel trapped
and not to do or think
what you want

Lisa Brokers.

The text on the 2021 tile reads:

Think through commemoration
also to resistance and to free,
to peace forward
and further,
in freedom forward

Karine Jekel
