Stumbling Stones Via del Tempio 4

These memorial stones (Stolpersteine or stumbling blocks) commemorate:
* Giacomo Terracina, born 1915, arrested 16 October 1943, deported to Auschwitz, died 7 April 1945, Buchenwald.
* Enrica Di Segni, born 1925, arrested 16 October 1943, deported to Auschwitz, murdered January 1944, Bergen-Belsen.
* Virginia Terracina, born 1943, arrested 16 October 1943, deported to Auschwitz, murdered 23 October 1943.

All three members of this family were deported on 18 Oct 1943 to Auschwitz. Baby Virginia was 4½ months old when she was killed – on the date she arrived in Auschwitz. Her mother was killed 3 months later in Bergen-Belsen and her father died 4 days before the Allies liberated the camp where he was imprisoned -- Buchenwald.

The small brass plaques, in the pavement in front of houses of which the (mostly Jewish) residents were persecuted or murdered by the Nazis, mention the name, date of birth and place (mostly a concentration camp) and date of death.

In many other cities, mainly in Germany but also in other European countries, the memorials also can be found. There are already many thousands of these plaques and their number is still counting. Almost all Stolpersteine are laid by the German artist himself, Gunter Demnig.
