Mississippi State Memorial Vicksburg

This memorial commemorates the troops from Mississippi (of the Confederates), involved in the Siege of Vicksburg.
At the Siege of Vicksburg, from 18 May to 4 July 1863, about 77,000 Northern soldiers under command of Major General Ulysses S. Grant fought against 33,000 Southern soldiers. The battle ended with the surrender of Vicksburg and almost 30,000 Confederates. Victory here and at Port Hudson gave the Union control of the Mississippi River.
