Information Sign Battle of Champion Hill

This plaque, in the Vicksburg National Military Park, tells about the Battle of Champion Hill (Battle of Baker's Creek) on 16 May 1863. Twenty miles to the east of Vicksburg, the army of the Confederate Lt. Gen. John C. Pemberton was defeated by the Union army under command of Maj. Gen. Ulysses S. Grant, which lead to the Siege of Vicksburg and surrender.
