Pennsylvania State Memorial Vicksburg

This memorial commemorates the troops from Pennsylvania, involved in the Siege of Vicksburg. The busts of Major General John Grubb Parke and Governor Andrew G. Curtin, involved in the Siege of Vicksburg, are standing at the memorial. Curtin was Governor of Pennsylvania from 1861 to 1867.

At the Siege of Vicksburg, from 18 May to 4 July 1863, about 77,000 Northern soldiers under command of Major General Ulysses S. Grant fought against 33,000 Southern soldiers. The battle ended with the surrender of Vicksburg and almost 30,000 Confederates. Victory here and at Port Hudson gave the Union control of the Mississippi River. The Union lost 4835 men (dead, wounded or missing), the Confederates 3202 men.
