Returned From Active Service Badge

The Returned from Active Service Badge (RASB) is awarded to Australian Defence Force personnel who have returned from active or warlike service in military campaigns. It allows them to display their involvement in operations while wearing civilian attire when service medals are not appropriate. The Australian Government determines eligibility for each conflict based on the circumstances at the time.

Design & Features
The badge features a tri-services emblem combining an anchor, wings, and the Rising Sun, surmounted by the Queen’s crown. Beneath the emblem, a boomerang bears the inscription "RETURNED FROM ACTIVE SERVICE." The reverse has pin clips for attachment and, in earlier issues, a production serial number (e.g., AF..., indicating issue to RAAF veterans), though current stocks do not include serial numbers.

History & Issuance
Awarded since 1945 and worn only in civilian attire on the left lapel. The badge was changed in 1953, with the King’s crown being substituted for the Queen’s crown. Since 1945, the award of the Australian Active Service Medal (AASM) has automatically qualified recipients for the RASB. However, it is not issued posthumously.

The RASB remained an important symbol of service, recognizing individuals who have participated in combat operations while ensuring their contribution is acknowledged beyond their time in uniform.

Following the retirement of the AASM, the RASB was also replaced by the Operational Service Badge, signifying warlike service under the new medal system.
