Commendation for Gallantry

The Commendation for Gallantry is a distinguished military decoration awarded to Australian Defence Force (ADF) personnel who have demonstrated exceptional bravery in combat or other hazardous situations. Established on 15 January 1991, it replaced the Imperial Mentioned in Despatches and ranks fourth among Australian Gallantry Decorations, positioned between the Royal Victorian Medal and the Commendation for Brave Conduct.

The Commendation for Gallantry is granted to individuals who have displayed "Acts of great heroism or conspicuous gallantry in action in circumstances of great peril". While primarily awarded for acts of courage in combat, it may also be presented for bravery shown in non-combat situations, including natural disasters, hostage crises, or terrorist attacks.

The award has also been awarded posthumously to Australian servicemen.

Design
The insignia features a gold-plated Federation Star, centrally placed on a row of flames made of gold-plated silver. It is attached to a plain orange ribbon, with a miniature version worn on the ribbon bar. The Federation Star is positioned 19 mm from the bottom of the ribbon and 16 mm from either edge.
