He was the flight operator of the Stirling bomber W7580 OJ-D, which, on its way back from a bombing mission to Duisburg (Germany), was shot down at 3:25 a.m. by a German night fighter (Uffz. Heinz Oloff) of I./NJG 1 in Venlo and crashed along the highway at the end of Koksteeg and Weerscheut near Vinkel.
The entire crew of seven perished. The remains were badly mutilated and burned and were buried in four coffins in the rectory garden next to the Roman Catholic St. Peter's Church in Uden on July 24, 1942. Four names were derived from remains of clothing and equipment.
Upon reburial at the British War Cemetery Idem on June 21, 1946, in a collective grave, the entire crew was registered by name.
