Biography

Dpl. Sld. Ekl. 4-G R Ir

Adrianus was born on 11 September 1925 in Princenhage and lived in Ginneken. As a conscript, he joined the Royal Netherlands Army in Oirschot in early 1947 and was assigned to the 4-7 Infantry Regiment. Due to the outbreak of revolutionary violence during the Indonesian struggle for independence, Adrianus was sent to the Dutch East Indies to help restore peace and Dutch authority. In February 1947, he left for the East on the Kota Baroe, arriving in Palembang on Sumatra after a sea voyage of more than a month.
The battalion remained stationed there for the next few months and was deployed to guard utilities and port facilities. During the First Police Action from 21 July to 4 August 1947, Adrianus remained in the vicinity of Palembang for guard duties and patrols through the surrounding kampongs. He was then transferred to outposts in the interior, where not only revolutionary fighters but also criminal gangs were causing unrest.
During 1948, partly due to the reinforcement of KNIL troops, the battalion experienced a relatively quiet period. From August onwards, however, the number of shootings and raids increased again, after which Adrianus was sent on patrol more frequently. Patrols lasting from several days to over a week were no longer an exception.
The battalion did not actively participate in the Second Police Action from 19 December 1948 to 5 January 1949, but the patrol area on Sumatra was considerably expanded. In the spring, Adrianus was transferred to the “Lampongs” in southern Sumatra, where new areas were secured together with KNIL soldiers.
At the end of June 1949, Adrianus was seriously wounded by enemy fire while on patrol. He was admitted to the military hospital in Tandjong Karang on the south coast in critical condition, but the medical assistance provided was to no avail. Adrianus died in the hospital on 1 July 1949 at the age of 23. He was laid to rest in Bandung at the Dutch military cemetery Pandu.
