Sergt. Staf Cie 2 Mitr.Bat.2e Div.
Koos was born on 10 July 1925 in Breda. As a conscript, Koos joined the Royal Netherlands Army in Venlo in the spring of 1947 and was assigned to the staff company of the 2nd Machine Gun Battalion.
Due to the outbreak of revolutionary violence during the Indonesian struggle for independence, Koos was sent to the Dutch East Indies to help restore peace and Dutch authority. After several months of training, he left on 30 July on the Volendam for the East, where he disembarked in Batavia after a month at sea. On the way, the battalion was plagued by an outbreak of “benign typhus”, as a result of which 77 sick men had to be taken to hospital on arrival and remain in quarantine for two weeks.
After coming ashore, Koos and his unit were initially stationed in Buitenzorg and assigned to guard duty. In November 1947, the battalion was sent to East Java, where they patrolled and secured various posts against revolutionary infiltrators.
Koos was killed in action on 9 March 1948 in Probolinggo, at the age of 22, having attained the rank of sergeant at the time of his death. He was laid to rest at the Dutch military cemetery Kembang Kuning in Surabaya.
