Biography

Conscript soldier, Carrier Platoon, Ost-Cie, 5th Battalion, Princess Irene Guard Regiment. On 26 November 1947, he departed from Rotterdam on the MS Kota-Inten bound for the Dutch East Indies and arrived in Padang, Sumatra, on 23 December 1947.

During a patrol on 19 May 1949, his group was ambushed and he went missing. The next day, he was found seriously wounded by a new patrol and died on the way to the hospital.

Jan van der Wal was buried with military honours at the military cemetery in Padang on 21 May 1949. In 1962, he was reburied at the Leuwigajah military cemetery in Cimahi (Bandung).
