Biography

Private Douglas Vincent Tobin was Roman Catholic and unmarried when he enlisted. He completed Grade 11. Before joining the Canadian Army on June 10, 1940, he worked as a miner. Once in uniform, Tobin was transferred to England with the Cape Breton Highlanders, where he trained in preparation for the Allied invasion of Western Europe. In June 1944, he landed in France with the North Nova Scotia Highlanders as part of the Normandy campaign. Tragically, just a day after setting foot on French soil, he was captured and executed by German forces.
