Sergeant Herfel was serving with the Luftwaffe well before the second world war started as he was awarded the Sudetenland medal of the 1st October 1938. He was then stationed on the Eastern Front before taking part in the gradual retreat through the Ukraine (hence his Krim shield) towards the Romanian border. His two Romanian awards are evidence of this. The Romanian medal for "Faithful Service" class with swords III.-a. is not a frequent award.
By the later end of 1944 he was serving on the Western front.
Here his service history ends and there is no information on whether he survived the war. The fact that he was in the West probably gave him a better chance of having done so.
