Geoffrey Ernest Lyne Veale entered the Royal Navy as a cadet in 1909. Commissioned as a Sub-Lieutenant in 1915, he served aboard HMS Geranium during the First World War. In April 1916, while stationed in Malta Harbour, Veale displayed remarkable bravery by destroying a drifting mine that threatened his ship—an act that likely saved many lives, coming just a day after HMS Russell was lost to a similar device.
Promoted steadily through the ranks, Veale reached the rank of Commander before retiring in 1932. With the outbreak of the Second World War, he was recalled to service and appointed Captain of HMS King Arthur.
