    Biography

Born as the son of Admiral Robert Stewart Phipps Hornby, Windham Mark Phipps Hornby entered the Royal Navy in 1909. He trained at Osborne and Dartmouth before serving aboard the training ship Cumberland. Appointed midshipman in 1914, he joined HMS Hampshire and transferred to HMS Warspite in 1915—a battleship that would see action at Jutland in 1916.

Hornby was promoted to sub-lieutenant in 1916 and joined the newly commissioned HMS Ramillies the following year. His ascent continued with promotion to lieutenant in 1918 and lieutenant-commander in 1925. He retired from active service in 1932. With the outbreak of the Second World War, he was recalled to service. He was deemed unfit for further naval service on 18 October 1944 due to mental health problems.
