On 15.02.1944, during the Second Battle of Vitebsk, the Soviets fought to expand their break-in area NW of Vitebsk towards the west. They aimed to do this by capturing the flanking positions in the Prudniki-Gorbatschi sector. Here Osterhold and his battalion were able to hold off all enemy attacks, in doing so decisively contributing to the swift end of the battle in the German favour. Osterhold was awarded the Knight’s Cross for this action.
