Biography

At 08.01 hours on 11 Nov 1942 the unescorted City of Ripon was hit aft by one torpedo from U-160 and sank after being hit by two coups de grāce at 08.11 hours about 90 miles northwest of Georgetown, British Guiana. 52 crew members and four gunners were lost. The master, 18 crew members and three gunners were picked up by the Brazilian steam merchant Midosi and landed at Port of Spain, Trinidad.

Herbert Burton was the Chief Officer of the S.S. Ripon and he is commemorated on Tower Hill Memorial, Panel 30
