The Knight’s Cross recommendation of Obersturmführer Lubich von Milovan reads as follows…

“SS-Obersturmführer Berndt Lubich von Milovan, along with 4 of his Sturmgeschütze, were on the 05.09.1943 deployed as security in the area north of Sslobodka.

In the midday hours of that day the Bolsheviks began a breakthrough attempt with about 1400 men, supported by 33 tanks. They attacked out of the forest north of Sslobodka in a southerly direction towards the village.

SS-Obersturmführer Lubich, deployed with his Sturmgeschütze near Sslobodka, decided to launched a counterattack without waiting for further orders. Despite losing 2 Sturmgeschütze right way due to engine failure, he continued to proceed against the overwhelming enemy force with just 2 Sturmgeschütze. Despite this setback SS-Obersturmführer Lubich nonetheless destroyed in the shortest time:

11 Russian T-34 tanks

In the meantime the other Sturmgeschütz had destroyed a further 2. The rest of the Russian tanks turned around to exit the battlefield. The infantry, under heavy fire from German artillery, fled back to their jump-off positions.

Through this brave deed SS-Obersturmführer Lubich nocked up a decisive success, he had:

1.) Prevented an enemy breakthrough with a Kampfgruppe assembled only from members of nearby supply troops and drivers and

2.) Prevented the Bolshevik attempt to encircle those elements of the Division in the area around Kolontajew, as well as the bridges near this village which were of vital importance to the Division.

Since the start of March 1943 SS-Obersturmführer Lubich has destroyed a total of 31 enemy tanks with his Sturmgeschütz.

For his brave deed and its associated decisive result, I ask that SS-Obersturmführer Lubich von Milovan be awarded the Knight’s Cross of the Iron Cross.”
