Masarié’s Knight’s Cross recommendation reads as follows…
"SS-Hauptsturmführer Masarie and his Aufklärungs-Abteilung were in the process of clearing both sides of the main road from Kharkov to Beigorod in the north on the afternoon of 14.03.1943. The lead troops arrived at Lipzy around 04:30 hours and assessed that there was strong, enemy forces blocking the further advance of the Aufklärungs Abteilung. SS-Hauptsturmführer Masarie took the decision to attack Lipzy with his weak recon troops, thereby clearing the way open on the main road and also dispersing the enemy between Kharkov, Belgorod and Woltschansk. In the difficult attack SS-Hauptsturmführer Masarie penetrated into Lipzy and fought the enemy who were defending well. Despite the difficult and bitter fighting, they threw the enemy out of this town. In this fight they captured or destroyed:
4 armoured cars
28 light vehicles
1 ammunition dump with artillery and mortar rounds
8000 litres of diesel fuel
100 dead Red Army soldiers
Through this independent decision and successful attack on Lipzy, SS-Hauptsturmführer Masarie created the prerequisite for the later advance to the northeast of the SS-Pz.Gren. Div. "Totenkopf". The hard counterattacks of the Russians proved how much the recovery of this location meant to the enemy.
I please ask that SS-Hauptsturmführer Masarie be awarded the Knight's Cross to the Iron Cross in recognition of his heroic deeds and their associated results."
In Fellgiebel the unit is written as SS-Pz-Aufkl-Abt 3 "Totenkopf"
