In three days of fierce battle Weinelt and his company of Panzer-Pioniere succeeded in repelling a total of eight enemy attacks, which were led by two battalions and numerous tanks. Every attack saw enemy tanks overrunning the German positions. After the fighting was over a total of 24 Soviet tanks lay destroyed on the battlefield, of which Weinelt himself destroyed 2 in close combat. For this major defensive success Weinelt would receive the Knight's Cross.
