The following newspaper excerpt (dated 03.12.1943) describes why Westenberger received the Knight’s Cross…

“Hauptmann Walter Westenberger… and his north German Grenadier-Bataillon were able to hold their positions northwest of Briansk for seven hours despite being outflanked on both sides and ultimately encircled. By launching his own flanking attacks into those enemy forces that had bypassed him he was able to inflict significant losses on the foe. After this he managed to break out to friendly territory as per orders with almost no losses to his own force.”
