Generalleutnant Schimpf was awarded the Knight’s Cross for the performance of his Division during the battle of Normandy. Of particular importance was the defensive success of the divisional Vorausabteilung and the Fallschirm-Sturmgeschütz-Brigade 12 along the St. Lo - Bayeux road on 14.06.1944. Following the arrival of the rest of the division the Fallschirmjäger would defend the line Bois de Cerisy-Hill 192-St. André-Caumont successfully against all attacks by US troops for three weeks.
