The following newspaper excerpt (dated 03.02.1943) describes why Stifter received the Knight’s Cross…

“Leutnant Stifter distinguished himself as a bomber pilot over the course of 482 sorties in the East. He died a heroic death on the 21.12.1942 whilst executing a difficult interdiction mission.”

103 of these sorties were flown against Sevastopol.
