Obergefreiter Schuster was an anti-tank gunner and member of the 23rd Panzer Division. On the morning of 30 January 1945 his gun was protecting a battalion command post when it came under attack by the Russians on three sides. In the ensuing battle Schuster single-handedly knocked out five out of a group of seven Russian tanks that had broken through within the space of 13 minutes, as well as two trucks with limbered AT guns. With his PaK he then engaged the attacking enemy troops and was able to take 21 prisoners. For successfully engaging and thwarting this attack, Schuster was awarded the Knight’s Cross.
