The following wartime excerpt describes why Bittlingmaier was awarded the Knight’s Cross…

“On the 29.06.1942 Oberleutnant Bittlingmaier led the I./Infanterie-Regiment 391 during the assault against the Sapun Heights (southeast of Fortress Sevastopol). The Bataillon stormed the heights with a Hurra, wherein the Bataillon commander personally led his men from the front during the battle. His exceptional bravery inspired the Bataillon to follow, and thus the steep hill was conquered after an hour and 10 minutes. Oberleutnant Bittlingmaier thrust beyond the ridge without waiting for the neighbouring units and proceeded to capture the main bunker as well as the adjacent concrete redoubt. Oberleutnant Bittlingmaier was badly wounded by a rifle round during the crushing of the last battle position, and he died on the 30.06.1942 as a result of his injuries.”
